This scholarship is offered by the Government of India, Ministry of Education. It is basically to prevent students from quitting school for lack of money and to help the study-wise. This is generally offered to the students of class 8 th to 12 th and this is generally sponsored by the government.

Under this programme, the students who are selected get a scholarship of twelve thousand rupees per year. That is the amount they get paid a month, in a thousand rupees. The health cover amount is transferred to the bank account of the beneficiary student under Direct Benefit Transfer. The scholarship is awarded annually from Class 9 to Class 12, provided the student continues to perform well in school.

The students who are from government schools as well as studying in class 8 are the main individuals who are eligible for this scholarship. Along with that the annual income of their family must not exceed 3.5 lakh per annum.

Where to Apply for NMMS Scholarship

The National Scholarship Portal is the primary portal where the candidates can apply for NMMS. Several scholarships given by the central government are made available through this portal. Please click here for NMMS scholarship registration and application by all the students.

But some states also maintain their own state education department portals. In this situation students have to first register in their state website and then attempt for NMMS exam. Plus, to get the actual scholarship money, they must also apply on the National Scholarship Portal.

Steps to Apply for NMMS Scholarship

The first step is to apply on the National Scholarship Portal. Then, simply sign in with your OTR number and password. After logging in, select the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship scheme from the list. Complete the application form with your personal, school, family income and bank account information.

Afterward, you have to add some documents. These are- your Aadhaar card, your passport-size photograph, Class 7 mark sheet, income certificate, caste certificate (if applicable) and a copy of your bank passbook.

Once you’ve uploaded those, go over all your entries and details for accuracy. If all is ok, click on submit button.

If your state has its own NMMS portal, you also need to apply there to apply for the exam. This is significant as the scholarship is applicable only after students would clear the NMMS examination.

Next comes the NMMS examination, the examination is normally held once every year in October -December.

The test is organised in 2 levels which are Mental Ability Test (MAT) as well as Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Both of the papers are of 1.5 hours duration.
